Celis
Brewery
1992-2000
Pierre Celis sold his brewery in Belgium and emigrated to
Austin in 1992. He formed a new brewery and began brewing beers like those
back home. Celis White, a Belgian Witbier, quickly gained cult status.
Micheal Jackson, the Beer Hunter, called it his favorite American beer.
Celis expanded quickly, too quickly perhaps, and the brewery was sold
to Miller Brewing Corporation to help pay off its debts. But the damage
had been done. By 2000, Celis brewery ceased production. On July 31, 2002,
Michigan Brewing Company
of Webberville, Michigan, who had purchased the old Celis brewing equipment
from Miller Brewing Company, purchased
the rights and recipes to the Celis product line. Their Celis Pale Bock
was tapped at their Oktoberfest on September 27, 2002.
